San Antonio Christian senior Ethan Sanders defended his TAPPS Class 6A state championships in the discus and shot put with meet-record performances on Friday at Waco Midway High School.
Sanders, who is signed with Texas A&M, won the shot put with a mark of 58 feet, 9 inches, which was 12 feet better than the field. Sanders set the previous meet record (56-2¼) last year.
Sanders won the discus with a toss of 171-8, a victory by 32 feet. The previous meet record was 160-2.
Antonian senior Garrett Kaalund earned three gold medals with wins in the boys 6A 200- and 400-meter dashes during Saturday’s running finals. He also anchored Antonian’s win in the 1,600 relay.
The Nebraska signee won the 200 in 21.76 seconds and the 400 in 48.37, which was a victory by more than two seconds. He teamed with Preston Jones, Todd Worth and Alexander Pena to win the 1,600 relay (3:24.29).
Antonian freshman Micaela Villarreal earned gold in the 3,200 run on Friday and the 1,600 run on Saturday. Her time of 11:21.29 in the 3,200 was 37 seconds faster than the field. She won the 1,600 with a 5:11.06.
Other double-gold winners included Boerne Geneva’s Isabella Godoy (girls 4A 800 and 1,600 runs) and Central Catholic’s Nathan Morales (boys 6A 1,600 and 3,200).
Morales’ effort helped Central Catholic to the boys 6A team championship.
Antonian had another individual winner with Worth in the boys 6A 800.
TMI swept the boys 5A distance events with Franco Parra in 3,200 and Marcelo Parra in the 1,600.
Schertz John Paul II had three winners in girls 4A, including Madeline Seebeck of Schertz John Paul II (triple jump), Maeve Sullivan (400 dash) and Mia Heyburn (300 hurdles).
Other individual running event winners include Central Catholic’s Gary Mejia (6A 110 hurdles) and Lutheran’s Olivia Davila (girls 4A 100).
Other field event winners from Friday were Carter McCray of TMI (boys 5A long jump), and Sophia Grinstead of Bulverde Bracken Christian (girls 2A shot put).
