Read through THE Newsletter AND GET ACTIVATED!

On the academic front, there is no time like the present to go through (or re-study) the famous 4th of July speech by statesman/orator/abolitionist Frederick Douglass. If you are much more of a listener than a reader, you’re in luck, because you can listen to James Earl Jones browse it.

JAMES EARL JONES READS THE DOUGLASS SPEECH.

Any time I re-browse this speech myself, 1 ingredient of it always hits me in a different way than the last time, relying on latest gatherings. Now it is this passage:

There are seventy-two crimes in the Point out of Virginia, which, if fully commited by a black person, (no make any difference how ignorant he be), subject him to the punishment of loss of life although only two of the same crimes will subject a white guy to the like punishment.

How little has adjusted, and how hard we will have to combat! But do not despair. As Coretta Scott King said, “Freedom is by no means genuinely won. You earn it and acquire it in each generation.” Let’s get.
